STRETCH MARKS The skin is made up of 3 layers, the epidermis (outer protective layer), the dermis (middle layer which gives the skin its firmness and flexibility) and the subcutis or hypodermis which consists of fat and connective tissue. The dermis or middle layer is where stretch marks occur after the skin has been tightly stretched over a period of time causing breaks or tears. These breaks allow the deeper layers of the skin to show through causing stretch marks. Stretch marks are very common particularly in women. The places on the body they most often occur are the buttocks, abdomen and thighs. Excessive weight gain, pregnancy or sudden growth spurts can lead to stretch marks forming. Other causes may be an underlying health condition such as Cushing’s Syndrome which is caused by an overproduction of steroid hormones. Stretch marks can be treated using by using a combination of treatments: Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT) or Medical Skin Needling can also be used to encourage the skin to repair and to encourage natural re-pigmentation. DERMATICIANS practitioners are able to offer both treatments for the best results.
